The files are actually there right? Nothing has changed in the file structure?

    No everything is there.
I had a little bit of a break-through this morning. Now I am stuck at the point where wordpress doesn’t recognize my password.
I tried an earlier version of my wordpress files to make sure no changes had taken place with yesterday’s ordeal. Now I am using the old MAMP version 2.2 and WordPress 3.9.2 I changed the settings of MAMP back to Apache port 80 and MySQL port 3306 (I was having difficulty with this port with the newer MAMP and had changed the settings to 8888 and 8889)
In Chrome I still got the “not found” page, but Firefox was able to connect to wordpress. Except that the following screens came up:
    Database Update Required
WordPress has been updated! Before we send you on your way, we have to update your database to the newest version.
The update process may take a little while, so please be patient.
    Update WordPress Database

    Update Complete
Your WordPress database has been successfully updated!
    Continue

The login page comes up but I can’t login because it doesn’t recognize my password. How can I reliably retrieve or update my password?
(Why does it work with Firefox and not Chrome?)

I was able to change my password for one of my sites and it is working well one. I still have major problem with my second site that I don’t know if it’s fixable.
I emptied the tables in my database.
In my attempt to reinstall WordPress I would get a message saying that WordPress is already installed and I needed to empty my database. Without knowing I might lose all my work I went ahead and did that. Is it all lost? Is there a way to retrieve the information?
