Cannot create a gallery in nextGEN !

I have created several thumbnail galleries using next GEN. All of them end up with the thumbnails all in a line, one on top of another! They havent changed their appearance from when I created them, they dont look as neat and gallery like as shown in nextGEN examples. I make a new gallery, add image by image uploading them one at a time! ive gone to Options, where Ive create 2 columns. Ive really kept to default settings and tried Shutter and thick box effects. Nothing, still one line! When thumbnail are clicked on they do what they shouls :enlarge and I can use tha arrows.
I know nothing about scripts and where/how one should insert them.
I have spent days ! and its tiring and really frustrating. I spend too much time fathoming the computer and not enough on illustrating, where I make the money!
