Cannot complete custom checks

When I add a custom checklist item it shows up in the Checklist section of the pre-publish pane.
It shows as a red X followed by the checklist item name in red.
But it is not itself a check list – there is no way of clicking to say the check has been completed.I have tried disabling all plugins apart from PublishPress Checklists and reverted to the Twenty Twenty-Two theme but still have the problem.
Help please.
