Cannot change tax name
-
Hi my store shipped worldwide and we charge tax based on the country which works. However we have VAT in the UK but DUTY TAX in the US but when customers are in the US, they see the tax name as VAT even though we’ve changed this to DUTY TAX
I’ve tried to usual clearing the cache, disabling plugins etc

Hi @_iain,
I understand how concerning it must be to see “VAT” still showing for your US customers even after updating it to “DUTY TAX.” Let’s work together to get this fixed.
Just to confirm, did everything work correctly before this issue started?
Please share a screenshot of your tax settings and tax classes using https://snipboard.io so we can take a closer look. Additionally, please share your system status report using https://pastebin.com, which will help us better understand your current setup and identify what might be causing the issue.
Hi please see below screenshots and system status:

Hi @_iain,
Thank you for sharing the screenshot and report. After reviewing your website, I noticed that no matter which country is selected, it still displays the message ”(includes {amount} VAT estimated for Slovenia)”.
After reviewing your report, I noticed that your checkout template has been customized by your theme, as shown below.

To help troubleshoot the issue more effectively, please switch your theme to Storefront and let us know once that’s done so we can proceed with further testing.
Hi I tried switching to a few different themes but the issue was still there. I tried Storefront and Twenty Twenty Five
Hi @_iain,
I appreciate your update and the time you’ve taken to test with different themes. Since the issue persists even with Storefront, this suggests the problem might be related to another plugin.
To help narrow this down, please perform a full conflict test by deactivating all plugins except WooCommerce, then check if the tax name displays correctly. If it does, reactivate your plugins one by one while testing after each activation to identify which one causes the issue. You can find detailed steps on how to do this in our guide here: https://woocommerce.com/document/how-to-test-for-conflicts/
Once you’ve completed the test, please share your findings so we can proceed from there. Let’s see how it goes!
Hi
I’ve gone through and temporarily disabled all plugins but the issue is still there even after clearing the cache
We have a translation plugin installed which I thought may have caused this but I disabled it completely and the issue is still there
Hi there!
Thank you for the update. I have checked the screenshot you shared and I can see that the tax is set to appear as a single total, which is why you are seeing VAT tax text instead of duty tax.
To fix this issue, please go to:
WooCommerce → Settings → Tax → Tax Options
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and locate the Display tax totals option. Set it to Itemized.Let us know if you still face the same issue.
Hi yep that fixed it thanks very much for your help
Hi @iain,
I appreciate the update and I’m really glad to hear that adjusting the tax display setting resolved the issue. It’s great to know everything is now working properly on your end.
I also noticed that you haven’t left a review for WooCommerce before. It would mean a lot if you could take a moment to share your experience with us here: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/woocommerce/reviews/#new-post. Your feedback helps us continue improving WooCommerce for store owners like you.
Wishing you continued success with your store!
