When I updated to the latest version of Seriously Simple Podcasting it crashed my website. I had my hosting company go in and deactivate the plugin. I deleted the plugin and downloaded the new version again. When I tried to activate it I got the following message:

Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING or ‘(‘ in /homepages/30/d345347523/htdocs/eastmountainvineyard/wp-content/plugins/seriously-simple-podcasting/seriously-simple-podcasting.php on line 23

Would love to get it working again. I really like the plugin when it works.

Hi @gregsrichard have you tried running a Plugin/Theme conflict test to determine if there is something else on the site that is conflicting with SSP? And/or has anything changed on your site recently that you think would contribute to this kind of issue happening? If you’re installing the previous version (that I assume was working properly before) on the site now and it’s not working as expected I’d suspect that there’s something else that could be contributing to this issue.

Let us know how that goes.

    Hi @@gregsrichard

Can you check what PHP version you are running? Based on the line that this error occurs on, this looks like it could be a PHP version issue. Since version 1.20.0, Seriously Simple Podcasting requires PHP version 5.6 or later.

Jonathan, you are correct that the PHP version we are running is 5.2.17 which is obviously lower than the 5.6 required. I suppose I can upgrade the PHP version to a higher one. Do you think that will that have any adverse affects on other plugins?

HI @gregsrichard tough to tell what the effects of upgrading PHP would be on other plugins or theme functionality but generally, more recent versions of PHP are more secure and faster for your site, so definitely worth looking into. If you have access to a staging environment for your site that’d be a good place to evaluate this.
