• Last week I got a 403 Forbidden Error. My site was not even visible. The next day my site was back, but when I tried to access the login, I got an Access Denied message. It has been about a week now and I still cannot get into my website. I am not well-versed at websites but I have been trying to find a source of help that I can understand and utilize. I found the following: “FTP in to host. Check file permissions on wp-login php. Change permissions back to 0644. Fixed. You should be able to login again.” Sounds simple? How does one FTP in to host? Is there a simple, understandable way to fix this problem? And what would be causing it in the first place? Has my site been hacked? Please, I need help. The website it http://www.burforduc.ca I have tried to access it with Firefox, Chrome, and as a last resort Bing. The site is there, but I cannot login. HELP!!!!

  • Hello,
Check this should resolve the problem:

    Plugins problem
    wp-content/plugins – rename the Plugin folder plugins_old.
    Theme problem
    /wp-content/themes/ folder -rename

For any case when you fix it rename your wp-admin url with a plugin and disable xmlrpc.

Please ignore Yanko’s advice about xmlrpc.

When you access the site via FTP and/or your hosting control panel, does the ownership of the wp-admin directory differ from, say, wp-content? What about the permissions? The directory permission should be 755 (or 775) and files therein should be 644 (or 664).

Do you have any security related plugins installed?

Anything in .htaccess that returns a 403?

There’s several issues I can see.

I’d recommend calling your web host for help. The host looks to be AWS.

Feel free to come back here if needed.

Thank you all for your responses. Thanks also to Jane at Fixrunner.com who “offered” to fix the problem for a flat rate of $49.

I have contacted my web host, Internic, and they are looking into the issue. I should have it fixed in the next day or two. Can’t tell you how helpful it was to actually speak to someone directly.

Thankfully I haven’t had many problems with the website in the past so I guess I was overdue.

I appreciate you taking the time to offer help. Much appreciated.

Sorry about the spam from fixrunner. Unfortunately, the structure of this site makes it impossible to truly ban them.
