It seams that in WC 11.0.1 if an order is cancelled in a payment gateway (due to a timeout in this case) the Cancelled order email is sent out to the admin. If i understand correctly that should only happen if the order first is in the state “Processing” or “Paused”?

    Might be a new bug?

    Hi @jpegtobbe !

Thanks for reaching out! Good question! I would like to let you know that it is not a bug, this one is an intentional change in WooCommerce 11.0.0.

The admin Cancelled order email now also fires when an order goes from pending to cancelled.

Before 11.0.0 it only fired on processing to cancelled and on hold to cancelled, so your understanding of the old behaviour is correct. The email’s own description was updated at the same time, and under WooCommerce > Settings > Emails > Cancelled order it now reads “pending, processing, or on hold”.

As for why you’re seeing more of these than you would expect: when a customer clicks Place order, WooCommerce saves the order as pending before handing them over to the payment gateway. If they never complete the payment, it stays pending until the Hold stock timer expires and WooCommerce cancels it automatically. Those automatic cancellations now generate the email too. On a store using a redirect gateway, that’s a routine event rather than an exception, which is why it feels like a lot.

One housekeeping note: you’re on 11.0.1 and the current release is 11.1.0, so it’s worth updating in general. It won’t change this though. Nothing has altered the cancelled order email behaviour since the change landed, so 11.1.0 behaves the same way

I hope that helps to clarify! 🙂

Ok i see! The tooltip in WC under emails still state how it worked before, so maybe that help text should be updated! (right where you can enable/disable the email template)

The problem is my customer (the store owner) reached out and said that they almost shipped an order by reading the cancel email they got.. so they first thought that it was the normal store new order email. Might be a slight problem now that it can be miss interpeted.. because… “users” 😉

Oh, I see! I’m relieved to hear that they didn’t ship and decided to touch base with you first 😄

    Cheers,
