    wordfence basic 6.3.16

A client of mine tried to login into their wp-admin site from a cafe today and he got the following message (I’m not sure if it’s verbatim): Access Denied! Your address is blacklisted. More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

A quick search of the actual server log files didn’t indicate anything. On the wordfence dashboard, there was nothing to indicate this (there were a few blocked IPs from other countries). This happened in Japan.

Could this plugin be the cause of this? If so, how can I get around this for this particular instance?

  • Think about it. 🙂
A Cafe IP.. Probably open network. Perfect anonymous place for hackers/attackers to hide and abuse. Sitting there with a laptop, drinking coffee, while your laptop is spamming or attacking away. 🙂
Heck, if the wireless is open, they can just park a car outside with the laptop running inside it, and go to the movies. 🙂
An IP highly likely to become blacklisted for so many reasons.

That particular message is most likely coming from your hosting provider.
Having blacklisted that IP in their outer fire-walling for bad behavior.

I know that for example BlueHost uses a similar type of message to cut off IPs that have been used for DDOS attacks or similar.
In that case, only contacting your hosting provider can tell you how to get it unlocked. If they would even consider that for a public access point.

    Hi @jahmic,

If the IP address doesn’t appear in the Wordfence Blocked IPs or on the Wordfence Live Traffic page then the block is happening elsewhere.

As @crudhunter pointed out, it is most likely caused by a firewall implemented upstream by your hosting provider.

I suggest you get in touch with them so they can further investigate.
