Hi, the latest update caused all my Contact Form 7 forms to give this email error. “Email address seems invalid”.

I tried to disable anti-spam for Contact Form 7 and still keep getting the error.

The email being using is my email that I’m testing with and used to always work until after the last update.

The email is a yahoo.com email with a dash in it.

I’m running a multisite network with different plugins activated on different sub sites. Plugin is activate per site and not network activated. It’s causing the same problem on all the sub sites and main site.

I need to use Contact Form 7 for other things I have going on with it.

    Thanks

    Hi Duke,

Thanks for letting us know. I’ll look into it right away and get a patch out today if needed.

We’ll do some testing on our end, and see what we can find.

Did you try it out with other email addresses?

Yes, if I remove the dash in the email, it works fine.

Nothing else has been changed on my network of sites except for the update of your plugin to the newest version.

I am running the latest version of WP.

    Thanks Scott

    Hi Duke,

Ok, thanks for letting me know that.

    According to Yahoo:

Only letters, numbers, underscores, and one period are allowed.

So, a hyphen would not be allowed in a real Yahoo email address.

Is the address you’re testing with an older email address, or is this a fake email address?

It’s a real one. It’s one I’ve had for years. It’s my primary email address.

Ok, thank you for letting me know. It sounds like they changed their email address rules after you got it then. Since there may be some users with older users, I’ll issue a patch.

The recent update improves the WordPress email validation by adding rules from RFC standards and ESP rules specific to Gmail and Yahoo.

    Please see the changelog:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-spamshield/changelog/

The WordPress core function is_email() lets a lot a lot of fake emails through, which is what sparked the new improvement. There may be a few edge cases like where users have email addresses under grandfathered standards, so if people let us know, we’ll track that and make any necessary improvements to the validation.

I’ll upload the fix in a few minutes, so in about an hour, download an updated copy of the plugin from the WordPress directory here and re-install it, and you will be good to go.

Just FYI… Yahoo let’s you have an alias email address alongside your main email address. That’s my alias email address. Not sure why they would state that. There are many others using a hyphen in their yahoo.com email address. I know because I see many in my autoresponder.

Yes we’re tracking about aliases. Thank you.

Well, it is Yahoo after all. Being confusing to customers seems to be one of their specialties. πŸ™‚

    You’re very welcome.

PS. We just confirmed that you can no longer add hyphens to aliases either.

The plugin has been patched with the fix. If you download a fresh copy from the WordPress directory ( https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/wp-spamshield.zip ) and reinstall, you will be good to go. Just overwrite the files in your directory, don’t uninstall it through the admin, otherwise you will lose your settings. (If you just want to replace the one file you need, it’s wp-spamshield.php.)

Let us know if you need any further help.
