Guys, it’s a serious omission to drop the Get Shortlink button from the Editor window in WP4.4.

This is a very effective function for efficiently posting a url to social media (in particular Twitter with constraints on characters) whilst at the same time preserving SEO benefits of the keywords in the full URL.

The alternative is a plugin or switching to tunyurl.com and both of these options are un-preferred.

Any chance of a quick update to 4.4 to return this code ? Or can someone advise how I can get that button back pls ?

    Regards,
    a

I imagine it was removed because the shortlink is really just the default permalink, ?p=[post-ID]

So, if your sites was just default permalinks, it would seem rather confusing, as the shortlink was no different that the permalink.

There is an easy way to figure out the shortlink though. For the following example, we’ll assume your site is example.com.

When you edit a post at example.com, you’ll notice the URL will be example.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=57&action=edit

In this example, the post ID is 57. So, the default permalink, and what used to be under the “Get Shortlink” button, is example.com/?p=57

Actually, Twitter automatically encodes all posted links using their own shortlink tool. So you can post a link as long as you like, and it won’t matter because Twitter forcibly shortens it for you.

whilst at the same time preserving SEO benefits of the keywords in the full URL

Common misconception. Keywords in your URL confer no SEO benefit at all. Make your URLs for people, not for robots.

    The alternative is a plugin

This is actually a supported case. If you use any plugin that modifies the default shortlinks, then the shortlink option magically will return in 4.4.

But the long and the short of it is that the default shortlinks were all but useless. Every social media network accepts arbitrary length URLs now. There are no real character limitations anymore.
