  • Specifically regarding the proxy stuff in that script:

I have something _similar_ to that on my site for blocking proxies. I do NOT use it for comnments, but for something else. AND, Im willing to share it, BUT i should warn you first:

    1. ALL aolers are behind proxies.
    2. LOTS of edu’s are behind proxies
    3. Even more people are behind proxies when they surf at work.

regarding that bit of code you linked to:

    1. I would never write anything that attempted to port scan any host without their prior knowledge.

    2. There are easier ways to accomplish that anyway.

    Regarding the DNSBL lookup stuff:

    3. That code says, “..it checks several reverse DNS blackhole lists for the IP”. There is already a plugin that does THAT and its here:

    Bad Behaviour:

Enable strict checking and you are good to go.

mypenza, I am really flattered that you liked my extension to phpbb enough to request this.

I think though that there are already extensions out there for wordpress that perform this function. I use Akismet and I am very happy with the results so far.

It works great on our forums, that have over 60,000 registered members!
The problem I have with bad behavior is that when I used it it blocked several shared verizon ip’s of users. The site I am using it is regional specific to one municipality, and users end up sharing the same ip pool. For some reason, some of those ip’s got blocked.

What I’m trying to do is stop a few people from using anonymous proxies from all over the world just to create the impression that they are a large group of people posting about specific issues.

mypena, I think thats really interesting.. I never intended it to work for such a large forum. Send me an email and I’ll see if I can help you.

mypenza – how recently did you use Bad Behavior. I believe since 2.0, a lot of those issues have been resolved, I think the current version is 2.0.8
