Greetings… in your theme files, there is a folder called child-theme which contains a child theme zip that you would install like a regular theme, then activate it. Make sure that the Preference Lite theme is installed (the parent theme) before installing the child theme.

I assure you THERE IS NO FOLDER in there. I DO HAVE the parent theme installed. AS indicated already. This is very frustrating, no one is really reading my email. I would send a screen shot but there is no way to do it. I know if I sent a link I would have to send a password,to my directory and I am not sharing my password. THIS IS THE DIRECTORY I AM LOOKING IN:
http://ftp.designpiece.net/designpiece.net/wp-content/themes/preference-lite/
NO FOLDER NAMED CHILD THEME
Try re-downloading the theme. The folder is there.

I have already made some modifications, which I was going to transfer to the child theme. Can I get the code from somewhere cut and paste into a text editor then upload?
If you want a copy of the child theme, just download a fresh copy of the Preference Lite theme for your computer and extract the child theme from the child-theme folder in the unpacked theme archive.

SO if I do this, it’s not going to automatically update my site, it will just be an extra on my computer drive?
Nothing on your site will be updated if you upload the child theme and activate it. Are you using the latest version of the parent theme?
I’m going to guess that you do not have a recent version of Preference Lite if you do not see the child-theme folder in your theme files. Just as esmi suggested, download a fresh new version and unzip that to your desktop. Then use that child theme inside of that to install and activate.
Please note that WordPress will see this as a new theme activation and any theme options you have done with the parent theme Preference lite will have to be redone as it does not import those settings, as well widgets that have been published to select widget positions will also have to be republished.
Any custom changes you made prior will definitely have to be copied or redone within the child theme. Then from this point on, any parent theme updates will not overwrite your custom changes.
