BBP Forum Problem with user as Spectator

I have been struggling with what I thought was something that was pretty simple.

I have a WP site and am using BBpress for the forum. I want user-X to be able to view the forums but not to post. I made user-X a subscriber in WP and a spectator in BBpress and made some forums private others public as a test. When I go to view the forums as user-X I can only see the Public forums. However if I change Spectator to Participant for user-X I can then see all the forums but then user-X can post which I do not want.

I came across your plugin BBP Private Groups when searching literature for an answer to my problem.I did download it but am have problems understanding its use but that is a problem with me and not the plugin.

Frankly I do not see why BBPress doesn’t work without any plugins as it looks like BBPress was designed as I am using it. Any help is appreciated and if I should post this elsewhere, my apologies.

not for me to say why bbpress is as it is.

so in private groups

dashboard>settings>bbp private groups>group name settings
set up group 1 and call it whatever you wish say ‘paricipate’
set up group 2 and call it what you wish say ‘spectate’

dashboard>settings>bbp private groups>topic permissions
click to activate

then in each forum
dashbaord>forums>all forums and edit each one in turn
In forum groups click to add group 1 and group 2
then click update

you will then see additional boxes in the forum groups box
for group 1 (participate) click ‘create/edit topics/replies’
for group 2 (participators) click only view

Thank you. With your instructions I am now able to accomplish what bbpress was supposed to do in the first place.

I just wanted to add that your fix also fixed another of my problems. Namely I am now able to use mailchimp rss email since I can mark the forums public and still maintain the privacy I wanted.

great – glad you are fixed.

you should test that mailchimp rss does what you are expecting. My plugin works with bbpress, but does not mark as ‘private’ in the way that wordpress understands. Mailchimp rss may work fine, but check that it does by testing.
