Backupwordpress never finishes
-
I have been running in to an issue where my Complete and File Only backup never end – the spinning wheel continues until I cancel the job (I can get a DB backup to complete regularly) I am running backupwordpress ver 3.6.3.1 and for troubleshooting I have deactivated/re-activated the plugin and I have also deleted and reinstalled the plugin – same result every time – simply spinning wheel.
I have searched this board and found some recommendations on php settings so I have set the following:
max_execution_time 300
max_input_time 300
memory_limit 256MWith these setting I still get the same result – the backup never finishes (I can see via my C-Panel that the zip file is created and appears to be complete) but as soon as I cancel the backup job the zip file, of course disappears.
I am running on StableHost and they helped my adjust the php settings – but they have no other suggestions.
Can you provide some guidance?

Hey there @jerrymatsumoto –
I’m sorry you’re having issues! Can I have you copy and paste the server information for me so I can help you troubleshoot a bit more?
If you go to the BackUpWordPress admin page and look on the upper righthand side, you’ll see a “help” tab you can click. This will open a drop-down module with a navigation menu on the left side. One of those options will be “Server info” – click on that and then copy/paste the information in a reply to me and we can use that information to see what’s happening on your server.
You can edit out any identifiable bits you need to, but this will help us in troubleshooting more, okay?
Thanks!
KatHello – thank you for your reply. Below is the copy of the server information requested (note: I removed my site’s initial path information). I should mention that I am also running backupwordpress on another site which hosted on 1and1 – that backup is not having problems and it backs up about 350MB per run. Thanks for your help.

Plugin Version 3.6.3.1Hey there –
Do me a favor and check the following things for me –
– Is the object cache enabled on the W3TC plugin? If so please disable it.
– check and see what your php.ini is set for onmax_execution_timeand see if you can upgrade it?
– Does the same thing happen if you try to run just a database backup? Thanks, let me know what you find out!
KatHello,
Answers to your questions:
1) I have made the following php settings and still experience the same issue:
max_execution_time 600
max_input_time 600
memory_limit 256M2) w3tc Object Cache is NOT enabled
3) when running just a database backup it works successfully.
FURTHERMORE – in experimenting with “excludes” on the Files and Database backups I have discovered that the backup size seems to be the work/fail factor:
Backup size 400mb or larger fails all the time (although it used to work)
Backup size 200mb or less seems to work consistentlyI am also checking with my hosting service because as noted, this used to work.
Thank you,
Jerry
Did you write me regarding the php version change being the solution? I haven’t been able to replicate an issue with this version on my test server so I’d love further information if you have anything else you can add?
If you didn’t write us directly regarding this, please try changing your php version to a lower stable release, like 5.6, and see if that makes a difference for your backups?
Thanks,
KatI’m going ahead and closing this out as resolved at this time. If someone has a similar issue please start a new topic so we can help you troubleshoot more effectively. This is likely due to a hard limit on 1&1 hosting for max_execution_time of 30 seconds on some plan levels.
Thank you!
KatI am having the same problem. Started when site hit 402MB in size. Ran for 8 hours with no backup. Deleted and reinstalled twice waiting for 2 hours each, still won’t complete backup.
Hey there @jimmydotorg – can you post a new topic/post for me with more details pretty please? If you can also share a bit of your server/site set up that would be helpful.
If you go to the BackUpWordPress admin page and look on the upper right-hand side, you’ll see a “help” tab you can click.
Another thing, if you could try running just a database backup and just a files-only backup (not the complete ones) and let me know if either of them complete? If the files-only one doesn’t, try excluding the wp-content directory and manually run the backup – let me know if that one completes?
Thanks so much – just go ahead and start a new topic with your information and I’ll be sure to help in the morning when I’m checking out the support tickets again!
Kat
