Hi, I’m not sure if my backups are working correctly or not because I didn’t get an email yesterday after the weekly backup. I checked the log and can’t see the ‘successfully completed’ message. What can I do to check this further? I’ve had some intermittent issues on my server, could that be the cause? Any help is appreciated!

    Hi there,

Could you please provide the log file using a service like Pastebin?
I can review the log for you to see if there are any error messages.

    Best regards,

    Nick

PS. If you prefer you could run another backup and share that log.

Hi Nick, after the intermittent server issues a few days ago when my site wasn’t loading, I was able to take one backup but it had some resource warnings which today’s automatic backup does too. My host did inform me of a resource issue on the shared server I use (I’m not aware whether it’s resolved or not and doubt they can increase the limits) but I’m wondering if there’s something else going on as well. The log file has exceeded Pastebin’s limits so I’m copying a couple of the warnings here. I hope this helps.

0002.436 (0) Output: zip warning: binziptest/test.zip not found or empty

2129.163 (3) [Warning] Table wp54_mailpoet_scheduled_task_subscribers has very many rows (334935) – we hope your web hosting company gives you enough resources to dump out that table in the backup. If not, you will need to either remove data from this table, or contact your hosting company to request more resources.

2134.765 (3) [Warning] Table wp54_popularpostssummary has very many rows (2414100) – we hope your web hosting company gives you enough resources to dump out that table in the backup. If not, you will need to either remove data from this table, or contact your hosting company to request more resources.

    Hi Gayatri,

    Thanks for your message.

The super large log file is not a good sign as they aren’t normally so big.
The resource issue mentioned may well play a part in any problems here.

Based on the log file sections you provided the database needs cleaning.
We do have a free plugin which helps to clean / optimize your database:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-optimize/

However, before optimizing the database you should have a backup of it.
I’d suggest running a backup of the database alone and seeing if it’s OK.

If the database backup doesn’t complete, there will at least be a log file.
From this log file we can look more closely at the problem for a solution.

If the database backup does succeed without problems you can optimize.
After this you could run a full backup (database and files) as the next test.

We’re here to help so please let me know how things go and I’ll assist you.

    Best regards,

    Nick

Hi Nick, I followed all the steps: ran a database backup which was successful with no warnings, then installed the plugin and optimized the site, and finally ran another full backup. This unfortunately still has warnings, the same as before. I could try contacting my host to find out if the resource issue continues but if it is, they are unlikely to resolve it anytime soon. The log file is 1.1 MB but pastebin has a limit of 512 kb so I’m still unable to share the entire thing. These are the four warnings I can see in the latest file.

    Hi Gayatri,

Thank you for the updated and additional information.

So it’s good news you were able to run the database backup, it tells us something.
It indicates that the database warnings are likely not causing a full backup failure.

It is difficult to pinpoint the problem without a log file as these files provide clues.
The size of the log file implies there may be many transfer breaks and resumptions.

To be honest, I’m only able to speculate at the moment without seeing log file info.
Can you perhaps divide the log file into 2 or 3 parts and put in on PasteBin like so?

    Best regards,

    Nick

Hi Nick, here is the log file split into five parts (I wasn’t sure how much of the file each link could take). I hope this helps!

    Hi Gayatri,

Thank you for the log files, it is indeed very helpful. And the news is good.

The last line of the log file confirms the backup succeeded with warnings:
1010.320 (2) The backup succeeded (with warnings) and is now complete

Those warnings were the ones we looked at related to the database tables.
We then tested / established the database backup runs without problems.

My concern was there may be a lot of time outs creating the large log file.
That’s not the case, it’s just there are many files due to the small split size.

So all in all, your backup looks fine based on the log file info I’ve reviewed.
Intermittent server issues, like you mentioned, can create backup problems.

Frequency of the server issues could be something which needs monitoring.
If the issues happen frequently it’s more likely they’ll interfere with a backup.

It’s possible such an issue meant you did not receive a backup email report.
Normally, the last few lines of the log file will let you know a report was sent.

For the moment all appears well, please do highlight server issues to hosting.
As I mentioned, issues with the server could negatively affect your backups.

    Best regards,

    Nick
