Backing up my website

Before I update my website, it has been suggested I save my database or back up my work; what would be the best way to do this?

I use this plugin on all of my client sites:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/backwpup/
I like that it allows me to save the backups on Dropbox and keep a number of versions.
