Automatic WP Update – now site is down
-
I had a message a couple of days ago that my WP Site had been updated automatically. I didn´t give it any further thought since I thought everything was in order.
Now when wanting to log into the site dashboard, I see the error 404. (NO ACCESS POSSIBLE)
Now what do I do???
Sincerely,
Zander

Try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the
wp-config.phpfile and the/wp-content/directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings. Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.
And that goes for content created with Optimize Press and other plugins as well?
Sincerely,
ZanderYes, you’re just replacing the WordPress core files, no content or plugins.
So this will fix the issue and re-grant me access to the WP Dashboard and all my work?
Sincerely,
ZanderI believe so, it sounds like some of your core files were damaged (or missed) during the update.
If not, let us know.
I see. And how do I “tick away” the Automatic update, so this annoying scenario doesn´t happen again?…
I certainly don´t hope that all my more than 6 months hard labour has vanished.
Sincerely,
ZanderI wouldn’t recommend doing that. This scenario shouldn’t happen again, we have millions of successful updates each time, and it’s far more important that you get the security fixes (in this case, 7 security fixes) for vulnerabilities that become public knowledge when the update is released.
To better protect yourself from accidents, you really should be keeping your own backups: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
Now, if you really do want to disable the auto-update system, here’s how to do it: https://codex.wordpress.org/Configuring_Automatic_Background_Updates#Update_Configuration
Well, I am not even able to log into my ftp account, due to this mashup of links etc.
The links on one site points to another site. This is what is making this case so annoying.
Sincerely,
ZanderYou’ll need to contact your hosting provider about that. WordPress has no control over FTP.
All I did was change the permalinks from one domain to another. And then the update at the same time.
Now I´m lost.
Zander
Question is how I log back into my Dashboard panel.
Zander
Oh, that would have been very good to know when this started. 😉
Change your
siteurlandhomevalues back to what they were before directly in the database: https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL#Changing_the_URL_directly_in_the_databaseYou’ll find phpMyAdmin in your hosting account’s control panel.
When you’re done, follow this guide to properly move WordPress: https://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress#Changing_Your_Domain_Name_and_URLs
Haha – I see.
So I haven´t lost anything? I really believe it´s still in there.
But I´m not able to make a backup. Or?… At least not from inside WordPress – untill I get in again. THEN I will make a backup 🙂
Can I make it before getting back in?
You can make a backup from outside of WordPress: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
I see inside the PhpMyAdmin, that the link is set to:
http://localhost/local-wordpress
Which sounds right. Since this is where I installed the WordPress site. But it doesn´t say anything about either of the two sites to chose from, in order to correct the right one.
Sincerely,
Zander
