I understand that a recent version of WP added an almost auto conversion from HTTP to HTTPS. Please refer me to a WP explanation as to how this works. Thanks.

Thanks. Please confirm that you still need to get an SSL Certificate and update it every 90 days.

If you will be using HTTPS, you will always need a certificate for it.

Certificate validity period depends on CA, where you will get certificate for your site.

A free LetsEncrypt CA certificates are valid for 90 days.
Some other CA’s may offer 1 Year certificates (or even more, however recent updates limited max lifetime for certificates to 398 days,
