Where did you hear that? unfortunately it is not the case; self-hosted WordPress does not have anything built-in to provide an automatic backup. You would need to provide your own means of backing up both files and database. This can be done manually via your hosting control panel, your host may provide a way to schedule a backup or you could set up a plugin.
If you have not made any provision for your own backups, your best chance to restore is to ask your hosting company whether they have a recent backup of both the files and the database.
If you’re looking for a way to set up automatic weekly site backups, here is a tutorial I made to explain how to do it:
How to Make Automatic Backups of a WordPress Site
It’s kind of long because there are lots of details, but hopefully it helps. 🙂

Thanks much for everyone’s input! Bluehost was able to restore my site to its status as of a few days ago when it was okay.
I will also check out the tutorial, do I will be less stupid in the future!
