    Hi guys

We are registered members of Apple News since last year but in January switched temporarily to a new host platform provider. This stopped our stories getting pulled to Apple News format automatically. However we are now back on our old WordPress CMS for our publication https://www.boxingnewsandviews.com but for some reason when we try to activate the plugin again for Apple News we get a header error message. We can download the app fine but upon hitting activate the screen goes completely white with a message saying: “The plugin does not have a valid header.” Your assistance would be kindly appreciated as we enjoyed using this plugin for Apple News format last year and up to mid January of this year when we temporarily switched host.

    Best,
    Niall

This issue could occur for two reasons:

    1. You’ve installed multiple copies of the same plugin
    2. Your download of the plugin was incomplete.

Can you please reinstall the plugin and verify you only have one copy of the plugin in your plugins directory? If the problem persists beyond that, please let us know.

    Hi Bradford

Thanks for the reply. I checked our CMS and definitely just had one version in the plugins tab. I deleted than re-installed but am still having the same problem when trying to activate the plugin and the same WordPress Error message popping up on a blank screen saying: “The plugin does not have a valid header.”

We migrated back to our old host and CMS recently for https://www.boxingandviews.com and am wondering is there some sort of old copy of the plugin perhaps still lingering somewhere in our theme files perhaps.

I can’t see why this would be the case though, as it’s the only plugin we’ve had trouble with so far since getting back on WordPress.

    Best,
    Niall

    Hi @niall2012

There could be a few things going on here. Some things to try:

    1) Deactivate and delete the Publish to Apple News plugin in the WordPress admin on the plugins page.
    2) Using an FTP/SFTP client, navigate to /wp-content/plugins on your web host and ensure that there are no folders called publish-to-apple-news or apple-news (or anything else that may look like it contains a copy of the plugin).
    3) Refresh the plugins page in WordPress and ensure that Publish to Apple News is not listed.
    4) Reinstall the plugin from the WordPress.org plugins registry.
    5) If you still get the message, try clearing the cache on the site (I noticed that you’re using WordPress Super Cache) as the list of plugins is cached by WordPress, and it’s possible that your caching plugin is interfering with WordPress re-indexing the list of plugins after a remove/install.

If you’re still having difficulty after the above, please let me know!

    Hi @niall2012

I’ve got a lead on this from another avenue. Were you trying to activate the plugin from the Plugins > Add New screen? As in, you click Install, then you click Activate? I’m able to reproduce the issue using that workflow on a clean install.

Does it activate properly if you go to Plugins > Installed Plugins and click the Activate link from there? If so, that’s your workaround until we fix the issue that’s preventing the Activate button from working properly on the Add New screen.

    Kevin,

Thank you very much for your second suggestion. The error was only coming up when immediately clicking activate on the download screen once installed.

As suggested by you, when I did a clean install again then went into the plugins screen itself, it activated just fine from there.

    Thanks again!

Excellent! I’m tracking progress on the fix for the Add Plugin page here:

    https://github.com/alleyinteractive/apple-news/issues/343

I’m going to close the issue here, and we will track progress on the long-term fix on GitHub.

    Thanks again!

No worries Kevin. Just had an issue there since publishing our first post with the plugin active. Will open up a new thread for it! Thanks for the help on this one though.

    Best,
    Niall
