When you register at wp.COM you get an email… with username, pw. Did you read it?
Yes I did.
It has an API key but when I copy and paste that key, it says you are not an owner of this API key and it doesn’t accept.
If I use the long in information in email and paste the API key, it says I am not in access list of this blog. When blog was registered, other API key was used. I mean it’s weired because I never got API key as I was registered through cpanel.
You don’t get an API key when your blog is hosted elsewhere. The only place you get the key is from an wp.com account.
Is the email address you have in your blog hosted at totalchoicehosting the same as the one you registered with wp.com? I bet that’s the issue.
You do NOT get any kind of API key (or free beer) on your own hosted WordPress installation. And I am not sure I can follow all those blog here, blog there jumps…
There are 3 things – not related to each other:
your own blog with admin as user and your own password (what you like to call cPanel blog); no API there but you will use the key that you get below:
your wordpress.com account with the username you chose at registration and the pw sent to you – that’s where you get the API key
your account here in the forum (at wordpress.org) – you don’t get anything here
Ok guys, thanks for quick replies. I understand what you are saying, I will try to explain my problem again.
I know I can’t get API key from Cpanel created username (X) and password. I can use that information to longin to site admin site of my blog.
I created another account at WP.com just for username (Y) so that I can get API key. And I got API key.
Now if I use cpanel username(X) and password to long in to site admin and then activate wordpress.com stat and Akismet, Akismet readily accept the key but wordpress.com says I am not the owner of this key.
And when I long in using WP.com account username (Y), I can’t get access to blog.
So I am not sure why Akismet accepts the key but wordpress.com doesn’t. And what should I do to resolve this problem.
I have only one blog.
OK, let’s separate then the issues.
1. You could activate Akismet and it is working, right? If yes, don’t even mention it anymore, it’s just confusing 🙂
2. You also want the stats plugin in your hosted blog, right? and that’s also asking for API key, as far as I remember.
You activate the plugin and a “Blogstats” submenu appears. You click on it and it asks you to login. Use the wp.COM username/pw combo!
Thanks guys, somehow it didn’t work with my last account but I created another WP.com account and that key worked out fine.
Thanks again.
