It has been a long time since I checked to see what Better WP Security is doing. Yes, there are/were some conflicts with the .htaccess code. See the link below for the best solution.

ok thanks, i,m not using the .hraccess bits in it so hopefully then it should be ok.

Yep, that last time I looked at Better WP Security .htaccess code it was all redundant to BPS .htaccess code with a couple of exceptions – the perishablepress 5G Blacklist that has been included in that plugin – http://perishablepress.com/5g-blacklist-2013/ and the hide login feature that apparently does not really work so no loss there. 😉
