• We have what seems an unusual issue with any portion of WP for which some form of ‘image display’ is involved. I.e……,

    1) When in the ‘Themes’ area of the dashboard, the visual preview of all installed themes is blank. The themes are available and seem to include all pertinent data about each. It’s just that the ‘preview’ of the theme does not display in the dashboard.

    2) In Media Mgr, all thumbnails are blank. These are all images that have been added there via the ‘Add New’ functionality. When MMgr is viewed via the ‘List View’, all image files have the expected filename and pertinent data (alt text, image dimensions, etc). So it would seem clear the system recognizes the files exist, it just doesn’t display the thumbnails.

    3) When an image block is added to an existing post and linked to an existing image available in MMgr, the image does not display when the site is viewed via a browser as an external site visitor. If alt text is defined, that will be displayed.

To my way of thinking, those are 3 fairly separate and distinct areas of WP, and to have no display of graphic images displayed in any of them is troubling.

We have checked Permissions for the wp-content\uploads\… folder, and all sub-folders, and those are all at 0755. And all the image files to be found in those sub-folders is set to 0644.

We have also deactivated all plugins…which seems not to have resolved the issue for any of the above items.

At this point, we’re rather stymied. Inclined to think there is a ‘Permissions’ issue involved *somewhere’, but thus far have been unable to track it down if so.

Anyone have any suggestions what should be investigated next?

    Thanks!

  • In situations like this the first question I would ask (of you) is when did you first notice the problem? Next question is can you remember what was done just before that? Also, have you checked any error logs to see what they show–and by any I mean all error logs you know of.

Some troubleshooting tips would be to enter the image URL directly in the Browser. If image shows then the problem would probably be in WordPress. You could also setup a test area which is password protected and install a new WordPress (Softaculous in cPanel makes this easy) and do some testing. If images display and everything works fine, you know for sure you current WordPress is hosed and complete reinstall may be necessary.

Lastly, your .htaccess file may contain some clues and should be checked and if all else fails, discuss with your Hoster providing as much information as possible.
