…I’m guided to get a WordPress Acct. Don’t I already have one?…sorry I’m a NOOB
Don’t be sorry, we all learn somewhere:) You’ll need to sign up for a wordpress.com account. You can then follow the instructions here.
Thanx for the reply.
Are all the pieces seperate? I mean after downloading WordPress onto my ASO acct… have the site up and running (such as it is)… I still need to create another account?
I tried that and I think I’ve very quickly screwed things up. My original blog http://www.marcorigazio.com works fine.
Now what is http://mrmarco.wordpress.com/ ?
Yup… I screwed something up 🙁
Do I have 2 accounts now? If so, can I delete the second one?
I’m getting a headache
Automattic, the company which produces both Akismet and WordPress.com are doing their best to create a system for administering Akismet, but until that happens, they are doing their best to work with what they have.
At this time, Akismet needs an API key to “glue” itself to your blog. This helps the developers with tracking bugs, general problems, and system abusers. Unfortunately, there is no Akismet-specific API key yet. So, until there is one, you can sign up for a blog at WordPress.com and use that blog’s API key with the Akismet installation on your blog. You will only need the WordPress.com blog for it’s API key.
I know that was probably confusing, so let me try to list this out.
1. Install and activate Akismet.
2. Register for a new WordPress.com blog, or login to your existing WordPress.com blog.
3. Find the API key for your WordPress.com blog.
4. Use that API key to complete Akismet’s activation on your regular WordPress blog.
5. You will never have to visit WordPress.com again.
All you need with the wordpress.com thing is the “API” code from your admin section. Then you can drop the .com blog if you don’t want to mess with it….
There are perfectly good alternatives to Akismet, perhaps even better – get Spam Karma 2 and Bad Behavior; http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/ and http://www.ioerror.us/software/bad-behavior/, respectively.
The mrmarco.wordpress.com is the .com blog where you need to grab the Akismet API if you want to use Akismet.
MacManX – Thanks buddy. That cleared up everything for me. I thought I was going nuts! Very simple fix once you can navigate the convoluted process.
Thanx again.
Vkaryl – I’ll check those out as well. Thanx.
