• WOW! Nice redo of the forum. Love it!

    Okay, here’s my question.

I have client whose site needs to *require* people to register before they can submit comments to it. That. I can handle. But before I put in a bunch of hours to custom write a script, I want to ask and see if there was something even similar that can finish up what he needs.

Basically, his lawyers told him that he needs to have “age verification” on his registration page, so that anyone under the age of 13 will get their parent’s permission before entering the site. (Personally, i think this is pointless, but whatever.)

Anyone know of a plugin or something that’ll let me intervene in the registration function of WP to do an age check? I’ve googled, but I guess I don’t know what this is called, ’cause I’m getting “image” plugins, but not “age” verification. A point in the right direction would be appreciated.

  • you are looking for COPPA
COPPA, or the Child Online Privacy and Protection Act of 1998, is a law in the United States requiring websites which can potentially collect information from minors under the age of 13 to have written parental consent or some other method of legal guardian acknowledgment, allowing the collection of personally identifiable information from a minor under the age of 13.

and there might be a fix or at least starting point here

Okay – just wanted to update. I got it working two different ways: either by entering in a birthday and checking it against the current date, or using a “I’m over the age of 13” checkbox. I got it inserted into the registration page by using the themed login & register plugin (I edited the code by adding in what I needed to). Works great 🙂

Next case on the calendar is #358, legals vs common sense.

A 13 year old can’t make a binding contract, so asking one to testify that they’re over 13 protects you from absolutely nothing.
