• I’ve been noticing a disconnect: WP_Query is incredibly powerful (meta queries, tax queries, date ranges, complex filters), but the WordPress admin UI barely uses it.

    Users are stuck with:

    • A single search box (title/excerpt/content only)
    • Basic dropdown filters (category, date, author)
    • No built-in way to filter by custom fields

    Real examples where this hurts:

    • E-commerce: Filter products by price range, color, stock (all meta)
    • News sites: Filter by “assigned editor”, “needs review”, date range
    • Real estate: Filter by price range, bedrooms, location

    Currently, users either:

    1. Buy expensive plugins (SearchWP, etc.)
    2. Write custom code (everyone reinvents the wheel)
    3. Live with limited filtering

    My questions:

    1. Is this a known limitation, or just not a priority?
    2. Has this been discussed before?
    3. What would a good solution look like? Better API? Admin UI hooks? Both?
    4. Is this intentionally left to plugins?

I’m not complaining—just wondering if others feel this gap, and if anyone has good solutions. Planning to explore this further but wanted to get community input first.

    Thoughts?
