Ads appeared without having installed

Hello
my wife noticed today that ads were appearing on her website without her having set up any.

After investigating I tried restoring the website and database to previous versions but without change (we have tried several backups up to 1 week old but the issue might be older)
My investigations show the following:
– ads appear in incognito mode or in a different browser but do not appear if I’m logged in to wordpress
– I tried deleting the plugins and themes folders and ads still appear
– I tried deleting everything except the wp-config.php and wp-contents folder and reupload a fresh download of wordpress files, no change
– I tried from several computers (in case the computer itself was infected!) but same result
– I checked the .htacess files
– other wordpress websites on the same hosting are not affected by this
– there are lots of unsuccesful connections since the 21 AUG and a successful one at a time where no one was supposedly connected

Any idea what to do to resolve the issue? I might try to restore older backups tomorrow but I would like to identify where the code was inserted
