    If you remove the background-color from #primary, add it to .hentry, then add a bottom margin to .hentry, you’ll be able to achieve this effect. I would make these changes in a child theme so they do not get overwritten by future theme updates.

    Great, thanks so much – worked like a charm. Only thing is that now the comment section doesn’t have the background colour – is there any way of adding the background colour + border to that as well?

    Sure — I don’t know what selectors off the top of my head, but you can use a browser addon like Firebug or Chrome Developer Tools to right-click and Inspect the comments section of your site. This will show you the CSS selectors on which to apply the background color and border.
