If you use the “add media” to a button, it adds it to wherever your cursor currently is.
that just adds it inline
Yes, but there is also the “Featured Image” which shows up as a thumbnail image on many themes, which is what I think you are looking for, judging by the link you included. Look for the “Set Featured Image” link when you edit your post.
(If you don’t see that link, click on “Screen Options” at the top of the page and tick the box marked “Featured Image”.)

That is great, thank you. So I have been able to set an image. Is there a way of just having the image show on the post selection page, but not inline on the actual post?

When I selected Set Featured Image it automatically added the image in both places.
