Go to appearance – (in wp.2.7+) – widgets. Select the ‘text’ widget, and enter the url of the image that you want to show. save the widget, save the sidebar, then go look.

tried editing the sidebar cod but there is no “text” widget there to edit. What I want is an image in the sidebar with links to a pdf file. i have the URL for both sources. help!
