How can I add the portfolio item excerpt underneath the thumbnail?

I tried adding <?php the_excerpt(); ?>, but it did not pull from the portfolio item.

Can someone please tell me how the portfolio filter page (ex. http://www.flipitconsulting.com/portfolio-filter/books/) calls the portfolio item excerpt?
