Can you please try the following:
- Remove the manually placed AdSense code.
- Unpublish your old AdSense ads and/or manually placed ad units.
- Revoke the AdSense connection at Advanced Ads > Settings > AdSense
- Connect to your new AdSense account on the same settings tab
- Create new AdSense ad units for your page again and place them.
- Wait 24h
If Advanced Ads and AdSense are connected, the header code will be automatically injected. If you want, you can additionally add the Auto ads verification code using the checkbox you already found.
Actually, there are two AdSense verification codes present on your website. The procedure above should set everything back to your new AdSense account and verification code.

I checked back your page and can confirm the AdSense auto ads code is integrated now and your website is showing auto ads as well. https://imgur.com/a/wgIk6Qy
Now for the “invalid response while retrieving…” message:
There is something not working as expected on your ad setup page in general. For example, only one of these buttons should be present at a time: https://d.pr/i/F0S3yg
Can you please try this also with a another browser, without ad blocking tools in place, and looking for script errors within your browsers debug console?
