activating side bars on Jolene

Hi, I’m customising Jolene – trying too at least – on the theme image I see two side bars but for the life of me I can’t activate them. Can only get left or right showing. I confess to being a newbie & so may have missed something simple but I’ve spent an age on this. Any advice gratefully recieved.
