    Hello,

I would like to know if the PDF Embedder plugin preserves PDF accessibility features when displaying a document.

More specifically, if the embedded PDF contains accessibility tags (tagged PDF, reading order, headings, alternative text, etc.), are these elements preserved and usable by assistive technologies such as screen readers when the document is displayed with your viewer?

Does the plugin rely entirely on PDF.js for rendering, and if so, does your implementation fully support tagged PDF accessibility?

We need to ensure WCAG / accessibility compliance when publishing documents on our WordPress site.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi @laportjo ,

Thank you for reaching out to us!

To be fully transparent, the PDF Embedder viewer is not currently 100% WCAG compliant. You can find our formal disclosure regarding this in our Terms of Service here: WCAG Compliance Disclaimer.

Regarding your specific questions on functionality:

    • Navigation: The viewer supports navigation via mouse and specific keyboard shortcuts (which you can view here).
    • Screen Readers: While we do not officially guarantee full support for all assistive technologies, some users have successfully used the plugin with screen readers such as JAWS.
    • Rendering: Our implementation focuses on a clean, reliable display across browsers, but because the viewer renders the document for web display, it may not always preserve every underlying accessibility tag in a way that all screen readers can interpret natively within the iframe.

What I would recommend is providing a direct text link to the PDF file immediately beneath the embedded viewer. This allows screen reader users to open the document directly in their preferred PDF viewer (like Adobe Acrobat or a native browser viewer), which is specifically designed to handle tagged PDFs, reading orders, and alt-text.

Having said that, our team is continuously working on additional features to improve how our viewer handles accessibility and to make our embedded documents more inclusive for all users.

Please let us know if you have any further questions!

    Hi @laportjo ,

We haven’t heard back from you in a few days, so I’m going to go ahead and close this thread for now. But if you’d like us to assist further, please feel welcome to continue the conversation.

    Thanks!
