My search console is listing product-sitemap.xml as being present in the group of sitemap categories. (Within sitemap_index.xml)

The pages, Posts and Categories all have content links in them, Google has a problem with the product-sitemap.xml and if I attempt a visit to that URL then I get a 502 error.

Googlebot says the URL is allowed.

Why would Yoast create that particular map section but then apparently have it locked / empty / errored ?

  • Please disable the XML sitemap functionality under SEO > XML Sitemaps, clear your cache, and enable the sitemap again. Once done, resubmit your sitemap_index.xml to Google as this may force Google to update your sitemap information.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I got the time to follow your instructions to the letter.
Unfortunately Google search console Still says Pending against
/product-sitemap.xml and it 502’s when you attempt to go to it.

All other Yoast xmls are fine, just the
    /product-sitemap.xml one is a problem.

Can you suggest anything else I could try?
    Thanks.

Many times when a sitemap returns a 500 error it is related to the server actually returning an error on the sitemaps stylesheet. Can you please check on the /product-sitemap.xsl file to see if this is returning an error as well? If you are also receiving an error on the stylesheet, this can be caused by a number of issues, including the permalinks or rewrite rules. We would first recommend to try resetting the permalink structure in WordPress which can be done by performing the following steps:

      Login to WordPress
      Go to Settings>Permalinks
Clicking ‘Save Changes’ without making any modifications

We also have additional information regarding the sitemap files creating an error here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/my-sitemap-index-is-giving-a-404-error-what-should-i-do/

If you continue to receive the error after resetting the permalinks, we would then also suggest adding a set of rewrite rules to your server and we have a guide on adding these for an Apache servers here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/xml-sitemaps-apache/ and for Nginx servers here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/xml-sitemaps-nginx/.

Thanks, the xsl file doers not return a 502, just a blank page, doesn’t show in source view though.
Tried a Settings > Permalinks change. Stilll gives a 502 errpr on the xml file as well.
The permalink settings are in this form
    Product permalinks – Standard > https://www.my-site.com/product/sample-product/

I’ve never had this issue before on similar sites. Will try the rewrite suggestions, unless you have any other ideas?

It looks like we’d need to investigate further but are unable to do so on these forums.

You can purchase Yoast SEO for WordPress Premium and receive our Premium email support and we can help you further with this particular issue.
