500 Error For All Themes > Appearance > Customize

    Hello,

    I’ve been receiving a 500 error when going to Appearance > Customize no matter which theme I have activated. I’ve tried the common solutions people have suggested on the forums – expanding the PHP Memory Limit, creating the new .htaccess file, I have all of my plugins deactivated. I called Bluehost and had them look into it a couple of times. We’ve rolled WP back from 4.7 to 4.6. None of these fixed the solution.

    I’m by no means a pro developer. Does anyone have any other suggestions I could try?

    If you have already checked the PHP version you may need to restore/replace the core files. The 500 error is pretty vague.

    Thanks @stanordan. I reached back out to Bluehost, and they attempted to restore/replace the core files. Still getting the 500 Error.

    Figured it out! I had a couple of Menus saved. After deleting those, the 500 error came off the Customize page.

    A little more insight about my issue, in case this helps anyone else. Not only was I not able to access Appearance Customize, but I couldn’t access Header or Background either.

    My error log showed PHP Fatal error: Uncaught exception ‘Exception’ with message ‘Supplied nav_menu_item value missing property: description’ in /home1/(my site)/public_html/wp-includes/customize/class-wp-customize-nav-menu-item-setting.php:194

    Going under Appearance > Menus and deleting some pre-existing menus helped resolve my 500 errors.
