Hi me-me123 it is very unlikely that you will ever block any of the search engines IP address using this feature in the plugin.

i was asking because I am getting a lot of 404’s from search engine bots.
They are following a ton of old links that are posted all over multiple forums, etc.. (hundreds of old links posted on hundreds of other sites where people posted links or images to my site on forums, etc..)
(and at the same time I am getting bombarded by a ton of 404’s from people fishing for random non existent files, which is why i want to enable it.. but I am hesitant because of the issue i just posted about SE bots following links)

no, because I was uncertain if it would block google bots, bing, etc..
Hi, if you want to know who is using that IP address use the following tool under WHOIS Lookup. This will let you know the website that is using that IP address. Then you can choose to block the IP address or not.

so it’s what i thought originally.. it will block those search engine bots.. 🙁
was hoping there was an easier way that would automatically block the countless rogue ip’s automatically without affecting search engines.. 🙁

The 404 Detection feature doesn’t block anything automatically.
You have to physically click on the “Temp Block” link in order for the IP address to be temporarily blocked for the configured length of time.
Therefore since you will be the one deciding which address gets blocked, you can do the WHOIS lookup as mentioned by mbrsolution to avoid blocking the wrong addresses.

You can always use the “blacklist” feature in the “Blacklist Manager” menu. Just find out which IP addresses or ranges AND/OR user agents you want to block and enter them in the settings. This feature will permanently block those addresses/ranges/user-agents.
