403 – can’t login anymore
-
Seems like I got kicked out by my own Firewall? Have been using the plugin for months without any problems. Out of a sudden, I can’t log-in anymore. Luckily, I had still an open session. Deactivated the (free) version and it works again.
What could have happened. Can I whitelist myself? Haven’t done anything except reloading pages to check CSS updates, etc.

Never heard of anyone getting blocked when trying to log in.. did it happen when you clicked the “Log in” button, or just when trying to visit the Login page? If the block happened when you were trying to login (after clicking the Log in button), then you should check if the username and password include any weird characters or character combinations.
Adds:
“Can I whitelist myself?”
The free version is very basic so there are no settings to do it. But it is possible to whitelist any blocked terms programmatically. You can find a guide here under “Remove patterns from BBQ firewall rules”.

Before – it doesn’t even show me the log-in page of wp-admin.
But when it happend the first time, I got kicked out of my session. Maybe for time reasons.. and when I tried to login again it gave me an 403 error page. Login via wp-login apparently still works. That was how I re-entered.
Might want to add, that I have directory protection for wp-admin. So I have to go through this extra barrier.. not sure if that’s a problem. But hasn’t been so far. Worked fine. Also, same username and password from the beginning.
This is how the URL looks like when I get the 403 error:
https://[my-siteurl]/wp-login.php?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2F[my-siteurl]%2Fwp-admin%2F&reauth=1
Yeah weird. It’s not something I can replicate on default WP install. I’m guessing just from your information that there was a glitch with another plugin or whatever you’ve got going on for the login stuff.
Yeah – but I still can’t login via wp-admin with the plugin active. No problem once BBQ is deleted, but that’s not really a solution.

The only way of finding out for sure is to do some basic troubleshooting of your plugins and theme. That way you can use a simple process of elimination to determine the exact cause. I would be glad to provide a free guide if it will be useful for you.
Sure. Really need to get this going before launch.
Want to add some stuff for clarification:
When BBQ is active, I can still access /wp-login, but not via /wp-admin. It gives me an HTTP 403 error and crbug/1173575, non-JS module files deprecated (Index):2758 in console. Once BBQ is turned off, I can access with no problems and no JS module error. Not sure if this has anything to do with it .. have no clue about programming.
All browsers (IE, Edge, Firefox, Chrome, Safari mobile).
I have been using BBQ and all of my current themes/plugins for months. Haven’t changed anything on that particular day except some CSS in the child theme. Only major change – but actually 2 days ago, was moving WP to a new domain.
Currently running newest version of WordPress and BBQ – PHP 8. Checked .htaccess as well – nothing obvious there.

UPDATE: Sry – don’t want to spam.
Works with mobile internet. Seems like it is somehow connected to my home network. Tried ipconfig/release, ipconfig/renew and ipconfig/flashdns + restarted router. No real change.
BUT – after flushdns, I can login in Chrome, not Edge apparently for 2-3 attempts.. and then, out of a sudden not anymore. I don’t get it.

No problem, here is a guide that explains how to troubleshoot WordPress. Let me know if any questions, or if I can provide any further infos about the plugin.
Thx. Tried running the site with WordPress default theme and no plugin but BBQ running. Same behaviour. Don’t have to time to setup a fresh install. Still believe it has something to do with BBQ blocking some sort of input .. works (for now) with my mobile device from within my local network. Also tried connecting via VPN .. same issue. Isn’t there some sort of log of BBQ I could access, telling me, what exactly it’s blocking?
“Tried running the site with WordPress default theme and no plugin but BBQ running. Same behaviour.”
Then there must be some other factor like network or server configuration, etc. If you ever get time to troubleshoot, that’s where I would begin. I would investigate from this end, but so far it’s not possible to replicate the issue.
“Isn’t there some sort of log of BBQ I could access, telling me, what exactly it’s blocking?”
BBQ is kept super lightweight and fast, so it doesn’t provide any logging functionality. Instead you can find all of the access/error information in your server logs. Ask your web host if unsure.
Have been talking to my webhost today. They haven’t changed server config and access/error log seems fine. No debug log in WordPress. Seems like a dead end to me.
Will try out different computers/network and see If I can identify a pattern. Will report back if I find anything that might help.
Thx!
Awesome @100lba, keep us posted of any progress. Or if any questions, feedback, etc. feel free to post again anytime.
