I tried the automatic upgrade, PC hang forever.
I then did the manual 3 steps.
The blog is gone
How to recover from this?

not very clear what actually happened.can you be more specific?
your blog is never gone as long as your database is intact or you have a back up

Ok thanks for your reply samboll; point taken this is a more precise description:
I undertook the 3 steps upgrade as detailed in:

After that when trying to access my blog
http://www.jeffpinkham.com
I get the following message
Http 500
teh website cannot display the page

delete the .htaccess in wordpress root
does site work now?
if so, regenerate permalinks
admin – settings – permalinks

That did not make a blind bit of difference
still nothing working after delete of .htaccess

Did you disable all your plugins before upgrading? If not, see the following for how to do this via phpMyAdmin.
