2 thumbnail sizes

I like the way WordPress crops thumbnails of uploaded images but I need 2 sizes of cropped thumbnails, is there a way to add this feature without a plugin?

My hope is to upload a large picture and WordPress gives me back 2x cropped thumbnails of different sizes, a medium, large and/or original size picture.
