• I am a very new and very inexperienced WordPress user. I had our business website overhauled, and changed from an html site (which I built and managed using Dreamweaver for many years) to a WordPress platform. This was done by an outside party, and was done in hopes of improving our SEO and reach in the new and ever-changing markets.

Word[Press tells me that our release is out of date – but I cannot get it to update. The following is the info I am getting back.

    ********************
    Downloading update from https://downloads.wordpress.org/release/wordpress-4.9.1-no-content.zip…

    Unpacking the update…

The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.: wp-admin/includes/update-core.php

    Installation Failed
    ******************************
I am on an older computer, running under Windows XP Pro, and using Firefox version 52.5.2 (32-bit) and do not know if this is part of my issue.

any advice or help would be much appreciated!

  • It is usually due to wrong file permissions. See this page in the codex for help on what those permissions should be and how to change them:

    https://codex.wordpress.org/Hardening_WordPress#File_Permissions

Even under Windows XP, you should have some sort of ftp client available (or Putty) to change those permissions.

As an aside, please update to a computer with a modern operating system. XP is past end of life and has known security vulnerabilities. If you can access your website through your computer, hackers could as well.

Well, I am truly bogged down now. I went in through my hosting service providers cPanel and uploaded the new version of WordPress – or so it said.
NOW I cannot open the website. AT ALL>
    http://www.Arena-Rehab.com is gone.
Tried from various directions – once in a while a FEW pages will show up on my phone, but on PC it isn’t happening.
I am currently on the NEW computer running under freshly updated Firefox and Windows 10, so that part of the issue should be gone.
I will check in with the hosting service and see what they say, but this one seems to be all WordPress oddity – it locked up in the middle of adding an image to a page I was editing (actually just rearranging images that had already been on the page) and from there on the site was just GONE….
If I cannot get to the site I know of no way to edit any settings OR check or add plugins.
At least I did do a backup before I started editing so all is not lost – I hope!
