UPDATE: The problem goes both ways. As an admin, I cannot see comments posted by students.

For students to see other comments, they need to be registered to the course and a student in that LearnDash group. If you use another group or membership plugin, it will not work.
Also, if you are an administrator, but not a member in the group, you will not see comments, you need to be a user in the group.
I deactivated Ultimate Member, but the student can only see their own comments.
And shouldn’t the group leader be able to see all comments without being added as a group member as well?
If you still want to use this plugin, you should get the latest free version from my learning-templates.com website.
this version is AJAXified, so it should now work fine for you – even if you have a membership plugin active.

With the plugin activated and set up the way you recommend, the student cannot view comments left by others. They can view the post and their own comments.
I’ve tried changing themes and disabling our other comment-related plugins, but it made no difference.
