i looked around and read a few posts regarding this, but i guess im still confused. I see where i can select feature image, but it doesnt allow me to set one for each category in my menu. how do i do that?

You cannot set a featured image for a category in WordPress, I am afraid. You can use plugin such as https://wordpress.org/plugins/category-featured-images/ and then would need to modify some theme files to display it.

In Vega, you can set up a header image that displays across all category pages.
