Remove sidebar from “pages”

Hi I have tried using the css snippets:

#secondary { display : none; }
#primary { width: 100%; border: none; padding-right: 0; border: 0;}

or

#primary { width: 100%; padding-right:0; }

But both don’t extend my content to the full width of the page, like there is an invisible sidebar there.
