Yesterday someone at my company logged in to the site and mistakenly deactivated the jetpack plugin. We need the plugin to be installed because we used a few options in it to make our site function properly. I tried to reactivate the plugin and then click connect jetpack. When I do this I get the error message “Error Details: Jetpack requires your site http://www.steelsmithinc.com to be publicly accessible.” I have racked my brain over this for 30 straight hours. I have tried just about everything I could think or and find online. I just read an article that says to check and make sure xmlrpc.php is functioning because jetpack needs it to connect. When I go to http://www.steelsmithinc.com/xmlrpc.php it brings up a login screen to authenticate. Any idea why and how to fix this?

    Thanks

When I go to http://www.steelsmithinc.com/xmlrpc.php it brings up a login screen to authenticate.

That’s indeed your problem. If you didn’t add that authentication option yourself via a plugin, you’ll need to contact your hosting provider and ask them if they currently restrict access to that XML-RPC file. If they do, they’ll need to remove that block for you to be able to use the Jetpack plugin and other services relying on the XML-RPC file, like the mobile apps for example.

    I hope this helps.

I did contact them and they insist that they do not restrict access to xml-rpc

If they don’t, I’d recommend that you check the different plugins installed on your site, to make sure no security or maintenance plugin currently restricts access to the file.

You can also check your site’s .htaccess file for any restrictions. If you’re not sure how to access that file, your hosting provider should be able to help.

Let me know how it goes.
