• I was reviewing the site stats and noticed that there are two users whose posts are hit. One is clearly named as me, the other shows as a mystery user. Even stranger yet, if I hover on the icon to open one of those posts in a new window, the URL I see on the lower left corner refers to my development site, testbed.biz with the year/month/ect. linking to a nonexisting post. If I click on that icon, the link cannot open. See image at:

    I have two questions:

    1. Why the mystery user even though I am the one who posts 99.9% of the articles?
    2. Is there a “leak” in the stats that show links to a URL that does not exist?

I have done a search in my database for testbed and could not find anything in the posts table. If you search for the posts on my real site, keptlight.com you will fine my name as the author. Your opinion and expertise will be much appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Cemal

I’m afraid that’s caused by the issues you experienced a couple of weeks ago:
    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/jetpack-stats-disappeared/

When I brought your site stats back, I also merged the stats that you had collected while the site IDs of your test site and production site were mixed up. That’s why you can now see stats data from testbed.biz in your production site’s stats.

If you’d like, I can undo that merge, but you will then lose the stats data that was collected during the few days when the stats issue was happening.

Let me know if you’d like me to go ahead and unmerge.

OK, I understand. But why am I getting current view stats from the other site? I am assuming what I marked with arrows are stats from one day, yesterday. Even today, I see more view indications on testbed.biz. My question still is why are the stats referring to a site that disappeared about three weeks ago? If you separate the testbed.biz stats, what will happen to the current visits since they refer to the site that I removed about 3 weeks ago?

Thank you for shedding some light on this.

My question still is why are the stats referring to a site that disappeared about three weeks ago?

That’s because some of the post IDs (and the stored stats for that ID) are the same on both the test and the production site. The stats are consequently fully merged.

what will happen to the current visits since they refer to the site that I removed about 3 weeks ago?

If the posts exist on the production site, when I unmerge we will get the data about a post ID only from the production site; your current stats won’t disappear, they’ll just be attached to a post on the production site instead.

I hope this clarifies things a bit.

The posts exist on the real, live site. Perhaps I should take you on your offer to reverse the merge and leave the live site, keptlight.com stats. The other site does not exist even as a test site.

    Appreciate the help, thanks.

I’ve just reversed the merge of your test site. Your stats should start getting back to normal in the next few hours.

Let me know if you need more help!

Thank you Jeremy, I will track the stats for the next week and holler if I need further help.

Jeremy, after 4 days I still see the mystery author with most of the hits and all those links point to the non existing testbed.biz URLs. Out of 96 views, 64 are pointing to testbed.biz under the mystery author.

That’s odd. Could you make sure that Jetpack is uninstalled from your test site?

    Thread Starter acekin

    (@acekin)

Jeremy, as I sad, there is no JetPack or even the site. I am still getting references to the same mystery author on testbed.biz domain for majority of hits. Nobody else sees my stats, so my concern is not for my site but for possibly something being buggy in JetPack.

I’ve made an additional change to your Jetpack settings on our end. Let me know how it goes.

    (@acekin)

Thank you Jeremy. I looked at today’s stats, there is no change yet. Most of the references are to testbed.biz. There is a site on that domain now but it is a clean-slate installation with no JetPack. Take a look at the screen capture from today’s stats:

    Sorry about that!

Could you try to go to this page, select your site, and click on the Full Sync button appearing at the bottom of the page?

Once the synchronization is complete, take another look at your stats and let me know if it helped!

    Thread Starter acekin

    (@acekin)

I have done the full sync, the result has not changed. The majority of the posts still refer to testbed.biz. I’m sure you can see my stats page. Another interesting thing to note is the “data” I can download as CSV. When I click on the authors title and choose download data as CSV I get ONLY the data for Cemal Ekin, the mystery author is not included in the data. I presume it is supposed to download the entire author data set which does not happen.

Thanks for giving that a try! We would need to update those records to use the new domain, but unfortunately the full synchronization didn’t help.

I’ve asked one of our Stats experts to take a closer look, and I’ll let you know as soon as we find a way to address the issue.

    Sorry for all the trouble!
