Custom Shortened Post titles

    Our website, http://www.mcawarenessnz.org uses the category menu plugin, to allow us to have several news threads based on topics, (NZ News, International news, and research articles) Due to the complexity of the post titles for the research articles, but the desire to preserve their full names we need to create another field, Im a Newbie to WP, but my understanding is we need to create a rule that populates a custom field (Post_title_25Characters) or similar for the posts, that is automagically populated, and then call that in the menu, instead of the default “%Post_title”

    Im a Server admin by trade so consider my self tech savvy, but Live in the land of GUI, and running this charity is full on, so I need spoon feeding on how to achieve this.

    Hey. If I understand your problem correctly, you need a way to make shorter links to your posts, so you can share them on twitter (that’s an example of course).

    There is two options I can offer you :
    Jetpack by WordPress.com offers an easy way to shorten link posts with the wp.me domain. This way, your post goes from http://www.mcawarenessnz.org/super-long-post-title to wp.me/sjk4

    Shortn.it allows you to create your own custom short links within your own domain. This way, your post goes from http://www.mcawarenessnz.org/super-long-post-title to http://www.mcawarenessnz.org/sjk4

    oh and by the way the links are generated randomly, i used sjk4 for the sake of the example

    Not quite, I know about Bitly type things, if you visit our website, and browse the drop down menu research….. you will see what I mean, I want to be able to call an abbreviated post title thats automatically generated, this has nothing to do with the HTML links, but how the post titles are called and displayed by the category menu plugin.

    so that this post title, which I want to preserve
    “Case report: The prescription of medical cannabis by a transitional pain service to wean a patient with complex pain from opioid use following liver transplantation”

    is abbreviated to
    “Case report: The prescription of medical cannabis by a transitional pain service…”
