so one step says export database to a file. If I do this will the source database be deleted or is the export version just a copy. these experts fail to mention the fine points…

Learning to upload localhost to webserver and wanting to modify file paths so that the http://localhost is replaced by the http://mysite phrase.

No, the exported version is just a copy.

With that said, it will be easier to modify those paths later with https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-search-replace/ so you only have to be worried about the WordPress and Site Addresses at Settings -> General in your Dashboard (aka the siteurl and home values in the _options table).

Another approach is to use the plugin “DUPLICATOR”, among other things it fixes all the changes of URL throughout the database. Please be aware that it is not just a matter of text search/replace upon the database entries, many entries have structured fields that code the length of the strings, ignoring this leads to pain.
