Menu Background Color can't be changed

I have used this plugin many times w/ great success, this is the first time I have had an issue.
With the particular theme I am using, for some reason, the background of the menu (which should be dark) is light and thus you can’t see the menu names because they are light colored as well and are masked / not viewable. I have changed the background color of the menu in the settings but it’s not changing the view. Is there some css to override and ensure the background of the menu (once it’s opened up / after “Menu” is clicked) is definitely black? I am not sure what that code would be. thanks so much!
