  • Themes hosted on wordpress.com have often been significantly modified to add extra features that are not available in the WPORG version. Some (if not all) of this functionality can be added back in by installing plugins. For example, try searching https://wordpress.org/plugins/ for “breadcrumb navigation” or “location map”.

Thanks for the very fast reply.

Is it possible for somebody to tell me which plugins were used on the WP.COM site for the Edin theme? I asked because I looked at plugins for logo and breadcrumb navigation and downloaded a couple. Ultimately, when I downloaded them they did not actually give me the feature I needed. I would like to go directly to what WP.com uses for Edin rather than a ‘hit and miss’ trial exercise until I stumble on the correct one.

Thanks again in advance for your assistance

Plugins may not have been used. It’s more likely that the theme was modified to include this functionality – functionality that is not allowed in WPORG themes as it is firmly regarded as “plugin territory”.

All I can suggest is that try some plugins out until you find ones that suit your needs. You might want to start with Jetpack as it incorporates Photon image handling which you will have used previously.

Most WordPress.com functionality is available in the self-hosted version of our themes through the Jetpack plugin, which Esmi mentioned above. (Welcome back, Esmi!)

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/jetpack/

Vital – The logo vanished with no option to add it back in

You will see the option in the Customizer’s Site Title, Tagline, and Logo panel after activating Jetpack.

Serious – My breadcrumb navigation vanished with no option to add it back in

Same as the above, activate Jetpack to get them back.

Minor – I inserted a location map in the footer, but cannot see this option in .org

Activate the Jetpack Extra Sidebar Widgets module and you’ll find the Contact Info Widget available in the widgets area.

I’ll look into the last two issues shortly.

Minor – I inserted a slider image in the page footer, but cannot see the option in .org

This is the Gallery widget – it’ll also be available when activating Jetpack’s Extra Sidebar Widgets module.

Serious – The images on my grid pages were all cropped to be the same on .com, but not on .org

    This one’s a strange one.

The theme is supposed to crop featured-page thumbnails to 330 by 240, which is what’s happening on your WordPress.com site. On your self-hosted site, they are all too short, one of them as short as 205px high.

Could you try re-uploading those three featured images from your hard drive to those three pages and see if that fixes it?

Thanks Esmi and Kathryn, this is really helpful. I will upload Jetpack, which sounds like it will fix almost all of my issues.

Kathryn, I also found the thumbnail images issues a bit odd. I found a setting that referred to cropping the images, so I have tried switching that on an off, but it made no difference. I shall try re-uploading the photos again and let you know how that goes.

    Thanks again for your help!

Thanks again for your help, everything is fixed. When I loaded Jetpack it seems that it also fixed the thumbnail image size (or it somehow resolved itself).

    Appreciate the help!

Excellent, Colin – I’m glad to hear everything is sorted out! Good luck with your new self-hosted site. 🙂
